Police: Fake Cop Targets Immigrants

POSTED: Wednesday, August 8, 2007

A man was arrested, accused of impersonating a police officer and pocketing thousands of dollars from unsuspecting illegal immigrants, officials told KPRC Local 2 Wednesday.

Jose Luis Montes Jr., 24, was apprehended on Aug. 2 and charged with impersonating a police officer, felony theft and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Investigators said Montes targeted immigrants who were presumed to be in the United States illegally. He wore a badge, gun and bulletproof vest when he approached them and offered to get their immigration documents processed for a fee, according to authorities.

The victims paid between $10,000 and $30,000, police said.

Investigators want other potential victims to come forward.

Montes is Hispanic, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He has short black hair, a mustache and goatee, and has a scar on his left eyebrow.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the HPD Major Offenders Division at 713-308-3100.
