METRO Union Calls For Safety Improvements

POSTED: Friday, July 20, 2007
UPDATED: 5:00 pm CDT July 20, 2007

A call for action was made Friday after two METRO bus drivers were attacked in a week, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The union representing METRO employees wants them to have better equipment in order to protect themselves and their passengers.

About 60 METRO bus drivers attended the meeting.

"I can just honestly tell you -- you do not know how scary (it) is," METRO union president Sandra Burleson said.

The first attack happened when a man who boarded the No. 2 bus on Bellaire Boulevard near Hillcroft Street before 6 a.m. Sunday pulled a gun on the driver and sexually assaulted her at the end of the route. A new sketch of the attacker was released on Wednesday. He remains on the loose.

The second attack happened on Tuesday when two men boarded a bus and became aggressive with the driver when they were asked to pay their fare. They also escaped.

The union president said there were problems with communications after the first assault.

"The young lady did not realize that anyone was coming to help her because she didn't know if anyone heard her response from the emergency radio or not," Burleson said.

Burleson also said the drivers' radios do not always work, something U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said she would look into along with other safety measures.

"Cameras, walkie-talkies or means of communicating. The response time for METRO police," Jackson Lee said.

She said millions of dollars from Homeland Security would be put in the hands of METRO for transportation security. She said she hopes the money will be used to make drivers and the public feel safe.

"People don't feel safe and they are public servants who are out amongst the public and the conditions of their workplace may also undermine how they can serve the public," Jackson Lee said.

KPRC Local 2 called METRO several times on Friday for a response. The calls were not returned.

The reward for information on the first attack is $25,000. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
