SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Red-light runners in Sugar Land will soon be caught in a whole new way, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
City Council approved a contract to install red-light cameras at four busy intersections.
"When you consider the amount of traffic that we have within this community, then anything that we can do to promote safety also promotes mobility," Sugar Land Police Chief Steve Griffith said.
The cameras will be installed at the following locations.
Highway 6 at Highway 59 Highway 6 at Lexington Boulevard Highway 59 at Williams Trace Boulevard West Airport Boulevard at Eldridge Parkway
"Running red lights is certainly one of those issues that causes very severe accidents because they're side-impact accidents," Griffith said.
The owner of the vehicle photographed running the light will receive a $75 fine in the mail. The fine will not increase on multiple violations.
The cameras will have a trial period in September.
Tickets will be issued beginning Oct. 1.
The revenue generated by the red-light cameras will be shared by the state and the city of Sugar Land for traffic enforcement programs.
