Teen Charged In Baseball Bat Beating

POSTED: Wednesday, July 18, 2007

A teenager has been accused of nearly beating a man to death with a baseball bat, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Fort Bend County sheriff's deputies said Matthew Ariel Bazzini, 18, was charged with aggravated assault.

Detectives said Arturo Espino, 20, and a woman were walking down Barbarossa Drive near Addicks Clodine Road at about 5:30 Monday when two men approached them.

The three men began to fight when witnesses said a red or maroon four-door car pulled up. Investigators said several people armed with baseball bats got out of the car and repeatedly hit Espino.

Espino was transported by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital. He was last listed in critical condition.

Deputies said the attack was likely gang-related and more people could be charged.

Bazzini is in the Fort Bend County Jail with bond set at $500,000.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.
