Burglary Leads To SWAT Standoff

POSTED: Monday, July 16, 2007
UPDATED: 12:25 pm CDT July 16, 2007

A burglary at a southwest Houston home sparked a SWAT standoff late Sunday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said Cedric Johnson noticed the lock was missing from his burglar bars and a broken window when he returned to his home on Krause Drive near Ridge Rock at about 11:30 p.m.

Johnson told investigators that he heard what sounded like a gun being loaded.

"I got to the top of the stairs and I heard somebody running across the room," Johnson said. "I immediately ran back down the stairs. When I got to the bottom of the stairs, when I got to the first half of the stairs, I heard gunshots."

Johnson said he saw many of his belongings in boxes and he heard the men talking.

"They was communicating with each other," he said. "One of them said, 'Uh-oh, how are we going to get out now?' And the other was like, 'I don't know.' And that's when the gunshots rang out."

Johnson said he ran to a neighbor's house and called for help.

Police said two or three shots were fired. No one was injured.

A SWAT standoff at the home lasted for several hours because investigators thought the men may have hidden in the attic.

The home was searched at about 4 a.m. and the men were not inside, police said.

Detectives have not released descriptions of the men.

A neighbor, who has lived in the area for 18 years, said burglaries are not common.

"We really don’t have any break-ins around here," the neighbor said. "This is the first time since I've been here that we've experienced anything like this."

Johnson said he has been burglarized before and believes his house may have been targeted.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
