HOUSTON, Texas -- A graveside service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. for Robert "Bobby" S. Finger at Beth Yeshurun Allen Parkway Cemetery, located at 3600 Allen Parkway.
Finger died Saturday night at Methodist Hospital, officials said. He was 62 years old.
Finger was born and raised in Houston. He attended Arizona State University, where he played collegiate baseball.
After attending college, Finger returned to Houston, where he would became the spokesman and eventually the CEO of his family's business, Finger Furniture Co. He won many awards while working for the company.
Under his leadership, Finger Furniture flooded the market with a tidal wave of advertisements. Finger's concept worked -- Finger is now considered the largest furniture retailer in the southwest. It is ranked 34th on the list of top 100 furniture stores in America, and Finger once estimated more than half the homes in Houston have his furniture inside.
In 2006, Finger followed family tradition and handed over the Finger Furniture reins to a fourth generation -- his son Rodney. Finger remained chairman and CEO.
Finger, along with Rosanne Rogers and Channel 2 Houston, pioneered Season 2 Give, which has been responsible for making the holiday season a lot brighter for many underprivileged children in the community.
Finger was a member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as a director and donated his time generously during his involvement. He also made financial donations to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which has benefited many young people in the community.
Finger also won the 2001 Cutting Horse World Championship as well as many other competitions during his cutting horse career. He was recently inducted into the National Cutting Horse Association Members Hall of Fame.
Mike Wells, a longtime friend of the Finger family and fellow rodeo board member, said Finger was always quick to give his time and financial support to the Houston rodeo.
"He just wanted to make a difference in terms of what we were doing and I think that's what leadership is- it doesn't have to be the guy that's wearing the badges, it's the guy that's doing the job."
Throughout his life, he was actively involved with many charities. Finger's contributions have been evident throughout the community, to museums, hospitals, and churches of all denominations, Goodwill Industries and the United Fund, the Home for the Aged, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, where he also served as chairman, local theaters and symphonies.
Preceded in death by his father, S.P. Finger, he is survived by his mother, Florence S. Finger; sister, Barbara O'Der; his son, Rodney S. Finger; his daughters, Annie and Sabrina Finger; daughter-in-law, Amy Finger; granddaughter, Olivia Finger and fiancé, Lisa Berger.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Robert S. Finger's memory be made to Seven Acres Jewish Home for the Aged or to the charity of your choice.
