Sugar Land May Crack Down On Sex Offenders

POSTED: Friday, July 6, 2007
UPDATED: 5:22 pm CDT July 6, 2007

The city of Sugar Land is considering a new ordinance that would seriously crack down on sex offenders wanting to live there, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

City Council voted to approve the ordinance on Tuesday in a first vote. It would keep registered sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of places where children gather, including parks, schools, and day care centers, among other places.

The requirements would effectively make the vast majority of Sugar Land's territory uninhabitable for convicted sex offenders by increasing upon the state's existing 1,000-foot barrier, officials said.

To become law, the ordinance has to be approved in a second vote by City Council.

Registered sex offenders currently living in Sugar Land would not be forced to move under the new ordinance.
