Tow Truck Driver Charged In Hit-And-Run

POSTED: Friday, June 29, 2007

A tow truck driver has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said Glen Lee Smith, 34, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with Cathy Deemer's death.

Detectives said Deemer, 53, was killed when she tried to stop Smith from taking her 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis from her home in the 600 block of West Archer on Saturday.

Deemer was dragged by the truck and suffered serious head injuries, officials said. She was transported to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, where she died.

Homicide investigators said they received a tip Sunday that the tow truck was near the Sheldon Reservoir.

Smith initially denied being involved in the tow, detectives said. He later admitted that he towed the car after being hired by Deemer's ex-husband, the registered owner of the car.

Investigators said Smith told them he did not know anything about Deemer's death.

Smith is being held in the Harris County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
