BAYTOWN, Texas -- A tow truck driver who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run has been found, officials told KPRC Local 2 Monday.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said Cathy Deemer, 53, was killed when she tried to stop the driver from taking her 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis from her home in the 600 block of West Archer at about 11 p.m. Saturday.
"Some wrecker driver drug this lady from her house to the road," neighbor John Roberts Varrette said. "It was just terrible."
Deemer was dragged by the truck and suffered serious head injuries, detectives said. She was transported to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, where she died.
Homicide investigators said they received a tip about the location of the tow truck late Sunday.
Deputies said they found a tow truck matching the description witnesses gave them near the Sheldon Reservoir.
The truck's owner initially denied being involved in the tow, detectives said. He later admitted that he towed the car after being hired by Deemer's ex-husband, the registered owner of the car.
Investigators said the driver, whose name was not released, told them he did not know anything about Deemer's death.
"If we heard it and I heard it way over there, I'm sure he knew something about it," Varrette said.
The driver has not been charged, investigators said.
"What we do know is that he was involved in an incident where either his vehicle or the vehicle he was towing basically killed somebody and that he left the scene," Lt. John Martin said. "At the very least, we've got failure to stop and render aide."
The case will be referred to a grand jury.
