Distemper Outbreak Closes Animal Shelter

POSTED: Monday, June 25, 2007

An animal shelter closed because of several cases of canine distemper, KPRC Local 2 reported Sunday.

Baytown police said the city's animal control facility on North Robert Lanier Boulevard near Garth Road closed on Thursday.

Officials said the biggest obstacle for the facility is taking control of the highly contagious viral disease.

"Right now they're having a hard time taking control of the situation because there are so many dogs," Detective Shane Darsee said. "It's such an easily passed disease."

The facility will be closed to dogs for 10 days while crews clean up and make sure the building is safe for the animals.

The facility also closed in 2002 and 2005 because of distemper outbreaks.

Experts advised new owners who have adopted a dog from the facility to have their pet checked by a veterinarian.

Officials said that any animal with signs of the disease can be returned for a refund.

For more information, contact the City of Baytown Animal Control Facility at 281-422-7600.
