Low Income Families Get Power Bill Relief

POSTED: Friday, June 22, 2007

Thousands of low-income families will soon get some relief on their electricity bills, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

The Public Utility Commission has authorized a summer discount of at least 12 percent from July until October. The average discount will be $25 to $30 per month.

Most eligible customers will be automatically enrolled through a matching system. About 316,000 customers have been matched so far.

Customers qualify for the discount if family income is at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level guidelines, $25,813 for a family of four. Consumers who receive food stamps, temporary assistance to needy families, supplemental security income, Medicaid or low-income Medicare benefits from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission are also eligible.

Beginning July 2, consumers who were not automatically matched may apply for the discount by visiting the PUC's Web site or by calling 1-800-241-7011.
