RICHMOND, Texas -- Men dressed in construction outfits knocked on a Fort Bend County home and robbed it when a child answered the door, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.
Two girls and their nanny were at home in the 7000 block of Rocky Ridge Lane at about noon on Wednesday when the doorbell rang.
"I answered the door because there's white (paint) all over the house, so I thought they were going to repaint and my mom forgot to tell me or something," Mehar Kahn said.
Four men wearing bright orange traffic vests were at the door. One of them also wore a white hardhat.
"He told me to stay quiet and then he pushed me to the side and told the other guys to come on," Kahn said.
One of the men grabbed Kahn's little sister.
"He threw me on the bed and I started to cry. He said, 'Where's the money?' and I said, 'I don't know' and he put his hand over my mouth," Maham Kahn said.
Detectives said the men ransacked the house and tied up the girls and the nanny using belts.
They were put in a closet before the men took off.
When the mother got home, she realized the thieves stole items that cannot be replaced.
"They took all my jewelry that I got as a gift or my parents gave it to me or my in-laws," Sumbal Kahn said.
The wedding gifts were stolen on her 11th anniversary.
Investigators said the robbery might be connected to a similar robbery that occurred in Sugar Land on Thistle Hill Court at about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Several women were held hostage when five or six men broke into the home after knocking on the door.
Detectives said the men tied the women up with tape and belts. They ransacked the home and took money and jewelry, police said.
A 19-year-old woman arrived at the home during the robbery and was also held hostage, police said. She eventually got free and ran to a neighbor's house to call for help.
Investigators said there is a simple way to protect against similar home invasions.
"You never want to open a door to anybody that you do not know," Lt. Michelle Allen said. "It's perfectly acceptable to talk through the door. Ask who they are. Ask what their business is."
No one suffered serious physical injuries.
Anyone with information regarding is asked to contact Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS (8477).
