HOUSTON -- Television is flooded with characters solving crime, so it's not surprising more students are looking at law enforcement and crime scene investigation as a career. A local university is helping students get a real-life look at solving crimes during a summer camp, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported Monday.
There's blood, guts and plenty of drama at Sam Houston University's Criminal Justice Camp, where hands-on training is the name of the game.
"You watch CSI and it is all the find -- a fingerprint and find the guy. It is way more than that on every level," student Cade Cryer said. "They let us run through a drill being in a room."
Students spend four days getting a good look at justice behind the scenes.
The campers also give forensics a try.
"Well, it's not like CSI. It is a little more difficult," student Zoe Gossett said.
"We want them to see what the careers are actually about -- what's required, the backgrounds you have to have, different interests and dispel some of those myths on TV," said Doris Powell with the SHSU CJ Camp.
Campers take field trips to the county jail, walk inside a prison and even stop at the morgue.
"That kind of stunk. I thought that was really cool picking up the body parts and looking at the dead body and stuff," Gossett said.
In its fourth year, the camp tries to light the fire of justice in its young students while still providing a reality check.
"It really was very intense, like it was really happening," Tucker said.
"It is hot, it is rainy -- you got to go investigate the crime scene so I think a real feel of what it is like to be in the field," Powell said.
Criminal Justice Camp is for students 15 to 17 years old.
Sam Houston State University offers three sessions of the camp and hopes to expand that next year. It costs $500 to attend.
