Slain Driver's Family Thinks He Is Road Rage Victim

POSTED: Friday, June 8, 2007

The family of a man who was killed while driving to work said they believe he was a victim of road rage, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said Carlos David Berdeguez, 47, died inside his pickup truck on the East Loop near Market Street on Thursday.

Investigators said Berdeguez called 911 at about 6:15 a.m. Other drivers also called 911 to report a swerving vehicle.

Berdeguez's wife said her husband left for his roofing job at about 5:40 a.m.

"He came in and kissed me good-bye and then left," Darlene Berdeguez said. "He just went to work like it was a normal morning."

Detectives said Carlos Berdeguez died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Police said that based on where Berdeguez was shot, he may have seen his killer.

The passenger-side windshield was shattered.

Berdeguez was the father of twin 6-year-old boys, who he coached in basketball and baseball. He coached his children the night before his death.

"He was coaching their team on all-stars," Darlene Berdeguez said. "He was out there 100 percent."

She said telling her children about their father's death was extremely difficult.

"I just told them that he had gone to heaven and that he'll be with us," she said.

Police said they do not have any suspects. Investigators are reviewing surveillance videos from nearby business and Houston TranStar freeway camera to see if there are any clues.

"They've taken away a good man, a good Christian man," Berdeguez said. "His family was his life and I don't know what we're going to do without him."
