HOUSTON -- Bond was raised on Wednesday for a 58-year-old man charged with shooting his son's 11-year-old friend to death after the boy visited his northwest Houston house, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police said Jonathan Dixson was killed on Sunday while visiting the home on Iron Liege Court of his neighbor Raymond Shaw, who has a 13-year-old son.
Shaw got upset and chased Jonathan and his friends out of his home, police said.
Investigators said Shaw fired a sawed-off shotgun once at Jonathan as he ran down the street. Jonathan was fatally shot in the back and head, police said.
Shaw was ordered to undergo 21-day psychological and medical evaluations to determine his stability.
"I couldn't intelligently tell you whether he's competent to stand trial right now. He's very distraught, crying. He can't really speak because of his throat cancer he's had in the past," defense attorney Skip Cornelius said.
Prosecutors said they raised his bond from $50,000 to $100,000 for the safety of the community.
Jonathan's family said despite what happened, they forgive Shaw because of their strong belief in God.
The family called the shooting a senseless crime.
"It hurt us. We hurt deeply but we have to forgive him," said Pamela Jones, the victim's cousin.
"Is he deranged? Or what was going on to make you get at a 11-year-old," said Lushon Williams, the victim's aunt.
A candlelight vigil will be held on Wednesday night to celebrate Jonathan's life. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. in front of the home where the boy was killed.
Shaw's next court date is June 13.
