1-Year-Old Nearly Drowns In Pool

POSTED: Monday, May 14, 2007

A 1-year-old child nearly drowned in a pool at a southwest Houston apartment complex, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said a woman saw the child fall into the pool at the Braes Court Apartments on South Braeswood Boulevard near Gessner Road at about noon Monday.

The woman screamed and a man jumped over the fence around the pool, dove into the water and got the child out, officials said.

Witnesses said they saw the child go down to the bottom of the pool twice before being rescued.

The child coughed up some water and was conscious and breathing when he was transported to a nearby hospital.

Detectives said the child slipped away from his great grandmother who was watching several children while their mother was at a job interview.

Residents said they have complained about bars missing on the fence around the pool.

Police said they have notified the complex's management that the fence must be repaired immediately.
