Residents Protest Piney Point City Hall Plan

POSTED: Thursday, May 10, 2007

Piney Point Village residents filled the parking lot of their current city hall on Wednesday to protest a plan to move city hall to a residential home, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The city has purchased a 7,000 square foot, $1.5 million mansion with a swimming pool and waterfall at 230 Blalock Rd. The mayor said the city kept the plans quiet to save money.

"We switched to not using our name and were able to buy land and building at a better price than if we were buying land and building a new building," Mayor Carol Fox said.

The city is being forced to move out of its current offices in June.

"Our options for using other peoples' facilities are running out," Fox said.

The hundreds of residents who turned out for a public hearing to change the zoning in the neighborhood were not impressed with the plan.

"I will be the lucky lady who will live next door to the new city hall," resident Karey Bresenhan said. "I don't want to do that. I don't think any of you do, either."

The home has a large driveway but not much parking. The closest parking lot is at a church across the street.

"You guys made a mistake," one resident said. "Admit the mistake and let's move on."

In addition to not wanting city hall to be in a residential neighborhood, some said it will cost too much to add parking, make it accessible for people with disabilities and secure the property.

The City Council also plans to use the new facility to hold night court.
