Girl, 5, Saves Grandma's Life

POSTED: Monday, May 7, 2007
UPDATED: 5:39 pm CDT May 7, 2007

A 5-year-old girl helped save her grandmother's life by calling 911 on her own, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Donna Sue Cole, 60, collapsed at home while taking care of Serenity Dawn Cole and her younger brother

"I just sort of just passed out," she said. "I don't even know what happened."

"She wouldn't wake up," Serenity said.

"She said, 'I started hitting you on the face -- wake up, wake up.' And then she said, 'I got your water and I poured it on you,'" Donna Sue Cole said.

When the grandmother did not respond, Serenity did what her grandmother taught her after Cole had a quadruple bypass a year ago. She called 911.

For 11½ minutes, a 911 dispatcher patiently talked to Serenity, who knew her street but not the address.

Emergency workers found the house and took Cole to the hospital in critical condition.

Officials said Cole could have died if she had not received such quick emergency treatment.

Emergency workers called Serenity a hero and said she did all the right things.
