HCSO: Thieves Use Forklift To Steal ATM

POSTED: Monday, May 7, 2007

Thieves used a forklift to steal an automatic teller machine from a northwest Harris County bank early Monday, officials told KPRC Local 2.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the machine was taken from Regions Bank on North Eldridge Parkway near Spencer Road at about 3 a.m.

Detectives said the thieves used the forklift to rip the machine out of the ground.

Bank officials said the machine was double-bolted to the ground after someone tried to steal it three months ago.

Detectives said the only surveillance camera that caught the burglary was the one inside the machine. The video showed the forklift heading straight for the machine.

The thieves likely loaded the machine into a box truck, deputies said.

The forklift the thieves used was found in a field behind the bank, officials said. Detectives are working to determine where the forklift, which was found running, was taken from.

Officials have not said how much cash was inside the machine.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
