Girl Drowns In Hotel Pool On School Trip

School Officials: Bailey Did Not Know How To Swim

A sophomore student from Willowridge High School was found dead Saturday at the bottom of a Corpus-Christi hotel swimming pool, officials said. Toynelle Lashea Bailey, 15, was at the hotel on a school trip with the high school band, Fort Bend Independent School District Superintendent Mary Ann Simpson said. Simpson said a lot of the band members and some of the parents chaperoning the group were in the pool with Bailey when she drowned. Bailey did not know how to swim, Simpson said.

Simpson said the pool was cleared after many of the swimmers realized Bailey was missing.

"They cleared the pool, and she was on the bottom of the pool," Simpson said. "It's really a tragic thing."

Paramedics were called to the scene, but they were unable to resuscitate Bailey, officials said.

The band members spent Friday night at the hotel, but they drove back to Fort Bend early Saturday morning, Simpson said.

School counselors will be at the high school on Tuesday, Simpson said, as the district will not be holding classes Monday due to a teacher in-service day.
