HOUSTON -- South Houston police said Saturday that they found a man who had been shot in the face slumped over in the driver's seat of a car at about 8 a.m.
Police said the car was very close to a little league baseball field, and many parents said they are concerned about the incident.
"It is very bizarre because it hits close to home," said parent Almi Flynt. "Obviously, the first concern is to keep the children as safe as possible."
League president Vincent Collura said several children were in the area preparing for T-ball games, but he said none of them saw the body.
"Once he yelled to us that there was a body inside the car, we took the children inside the concession stand," Collura said.
Police said they believe it was likely a robbery since the car was ransacked and the trunk was left opened.
Investigators said they collected evidence for a murder case.
Officials said they shut down the complex, causing several games to be postponed.
"We basically had to make the whole complex a crime scene," said South Houston Police Chief Herbert Gilbert.
Police said no one has been questioned in connection with the death.
Parents said they were thankful that the children were spared from the violence and the unsettling scene that was left behind.
"This is a small city, and people do talk. It's pretty scary. We don't know who it is," said parent Davide Rivera.
"This park -- we've been here for many years. It's always been very safe. I still feel very safe in coming here," Flynt said.
Police said they were forced to cancel nine T-ball games, which affected around 125 kids.
Police said the vehicle was a 1993 white Honda Civic with a license plate of W19 CK5.
Police said they are not releasing the name of the person that was found until they are able to notify the family of the deceased.
If anyone has any information on this incident, they are asked to call 713-944-1916.
