Metal Detectors Installed At Smiley High School After Threats

POSTED: Monday, April 30, 2007
UPDATED: 11:54 am CDT April 30, 2007

Security at Smiley High School was increased after several threats were made against the students last week, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Everyone went through metal detectors to be sure no weapons are brought onto school grounds. School officials said no weapons were found.

"Every school needs it, not just this one," mother Herese Green said.

Classes at the school were dismissed early on Friday after a bomb scare and a gun scare.

The school was evacuated early in the day after a bomb threat was made. The school was thoroughly searched and no device was found.

Officials said a 10th-grade student was arrested at the school on Friday after he allegedly took a gun to school. He also made a terroristic threat against the school on Tuesday, police said

Barbara Jones said her daughter knows the accused teen. She said her daughter told her the boy kept to himself.

"She said he was maybe a little slow or something in his early years," Jones said.

The metal detectors will be in place through the end of the school year.

About 1,100 students attend Smiley High School.
