"We love animals at YES Prep East End,” school director Leah Peters said. “Despite our big hearts and best efforts, it's impossible for us to help all of the animals that find their way to our campus. Our best bet for helping animals in the East End and across Houston is better education and support."

During the event, 130 students traveled to Hidalgo Park in southeast Houston and spoke out about the suffering that so many animals in the community must endure because of overpopulation, mistreatment and neglect.

Members from both organizations marched the streets of Houston along with their four-legged friends to remind neighbors dogs have feelings and want to be loved.

Precinct 6 Constable Heliodoro Martinez also attend the event as a special guest.

Since 2010, Barrio Dogs has worked in Houston's East End to provide community education and free spaying and neutering for pets belonging to East End residents.
