HOUSTON -- A Houston family awoke to find bullets streaming through its walls Monday morning, coming from a nearby home. A woman's body was later found shot.
The shooting happened shortly before 5:30 a.m. at the family's duplex located in the 2800 block of Liberty near U.S. Highway 59 in northeast Houston.
Houston police told News2Houston that when officers arrived at the scene they found the 40-year-old woman's body, and that she had been shot several times.
During their investigation, police said that the woman tried to run from the gunman.
"From the kitchen area, you can basically follow the shots into the bedroom," homicide Detective Fred Hale said.
Police said that the woman didn't live in the home, because it was vacant.
But next door is where the Adams' family lives.
Ernest Adams and his brother had spent the night to take care of their mother, when the shots rang out.
Adams said that after seeing the bullets flying into the bedroom room, where he and his brother were sleeping, he ran into another room in his house.
But Adams said that he didn't go outside to investigate.
"No. I probably (would've) caught the bullet," Adams said. "That's why I ran in the front. If I would've (gotten) up (and) went towards it, I would have caught the bullet."
"He could have very well been hit," Hale said. "It was about that angle; about bed high."
Investigators said that drug paraphernalia was found inside the vacant home, and that a witness saw the suspect leaving the duplex.
Police described the suspect as being 6 feet 3 inches tall and heavy set, and driving a red, four-door 1980s style Chrysler.
