POSTED: Wednesday, April 18, 2007
UPDATED: 12:37 pm CDT April 18, 2007

A man was captured after he tried to escape from an inmate-processing center in downtown Houston Wednesday morning, police told KPRC Local 2.

Houston police said Michael Lavell Shepherd, 18, was being escorted into the Harris County Inmate Processing Center at 1201 Commerce St. near San Jacinto Street when he ran from a detective.

Shepherd was being taken out of a vehicle and noticed the detective wearing boots and thought he could outrun him, police said.

Detectives said Shepherd ran across a parking lot and jumped over a wall bordering Buffalo Bayou and fell 20 to 30 feet.

Deputies rescued Shepherd and were able to take him into custody using a nearby boat, officials said.

No one was injured.
