Katy Student Diagnosed With Meningitis

KATY, Texas -- A male student at a
Katy Taylor High School.has been diagnose with bacterial meningitis, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services officials said no actions were needed at the school to prevent the spread of the disease.
Letters were sent home with students to let their parents know about the diagnosis.
Officials said the best way to prevent getting meningitis is thorough hand washing.
Two students at Texas Southern University were recently diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. Rodney Bernard, 21, died and the other student was hospitalized. Hundreds of students who were potentially exposed to the disease were given medication as precaution.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, meningitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. It is important to know which type of bacteria is causing the meningitis because antibiotics can prevent some types from spreading and infecting other people.
