Activist Wants Community Involvement After Alleged Child Rape

POSTED: Friday, April 13, 2007
UPDATED: 4:40 pm CDT April 13, 2007

A group of community activists were out in force Friday in the southeast Houston neighborhood where a 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Community activist Quanell X and other community leaders were on South Acres Drive out fliers and and putting up posters with a composite sketch of the alleged offender.

Houston police said the child was walking to Albert Thomas Junior High School along Anna Held Street on April 2 when the man approached the girl from behind, grabbed her, pointed a gun at her and sexually assaulted her.

The girl had missed the bus and was walking to school with her brother, the victim's mother said. It was after the siblings parted ways near a church that the girl was assaulted and dragged into a nearby shack.

The victim's mother said her daughter was lucky to get away and that next time the person assaulted might not be so lucky.

"She was lucky. She was blessed to get away with her life," said the victim's mother, who did not want to be identified. "She fought to get away. He knew what he was doing. Next time it could be more violent than what he was with her."

Quanell X said parents and residents should be outside patrolling to protect their children.

"In this community it's like the child predators are saying, 'Catch me if you can,'" Quanell X said. "That's something we have to stop and we have to challenge."

The community activist was in front of Albert Thomas Junior High trying to make sure that parents knew the alleged rapist was still on the loose.

Activists said that incidents like this will continue to happen if the community does not take action.

"We see small children walking by themselves, riding the bus by themselves," Quanell X said. "Where are the men of this community and the parents of this community? "

Quanell X and other community activists said the Houston Independent School District and the Houston Police Department are not doing enough to keep the community safe.

"In the black community, they're not taking child abductions like this as seriously as they should," Quanell X said. "Because it's just another young, poor girl in a poor minority area."

The girl told investigators that the man was black, 40 to 45 years old and 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall with a muscular build. The man has a dark complexion, is bald and has a crooked right front tooth, police said.

Investigators said they believe he lives in the neighborhood.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Houston Police Department Juvenile Division at 713-731-5353 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
