A Tomball High School student died after the car he was in which he was riding crashed into an embankment, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu began swerving and crashed into a ditch on Edenwood Drive. The car became airborne after hitting the embankment and slammed onto nearby Metzler Creek Drive, investigators said.

Passenger James White was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he later died.

Driver Alex De La Cruz and a second passenger were seriously injured in the crash and also transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

Authorities said De La Cruz was under the influence of an illegal drug at the time of the crash.
