Rice Player Stabbed To Death

POSTED: Thursday, April 5, 2007
UPDATED: 5:38 pm CDT April 5, 2007

A Rice University basketball player who was celebrating his birthday was stabbed to death early Thursday after a fight at a bar in College Station, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Jonathan Bailey, 22, was found along with his twin brother Janson, whose condition was not available.

Investigators said both men were stabbed after a fight broke out with several other men inside the V-Bar in College Station at about 1:45 a.m. The brothers were thrown out, but the fight continued outside.

Police said that's when both brothers were stabbed.

Both were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in College Station with multiple stab wounds.

Jonathan Bailey died a short time later. Janson Bailey's condition was not released.

Two suspects were arrested nine hours later. Charges have not yet been filed.

Jonathan Bailey was a junior transfer student. He was remembered as a smart student who worked his way through college while taking care of his two younger brothers.

"This is obviously a very tragic and painful day for Rice University and our basketball family," said Willis Wilson, Rice's basketball coach. "Here's a guy who was paying his way through school and going through all the rigors of athletics and that alone is to be commended. But, to do it and want to be there day in and day out -- to be there for his teammates and be such a great support to the members of this program, I think says a lot about who John was."

Bailey was the fifth Rice University student to die this school year, according to school administrators. Bailey was the second student athlete to die.

"I just talked to John right before he left yesterday. (I told him) 'Have fun, happy birthday' right before he left," friend Lorenzo Williams said.

Rice officials said they are planning a memorial service but details have not yet been finalized.
