Residents Boiling Over Dirty Water

A Pearland community is tired of dealing with dirty water every month and not getting a resolution, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Residents along Cottonwood Street said the dirty, rusty water appears at least once a month.

The water system for the area is owned by Aqua America.

The president of Aqua America said the brown water appears when a bad compressor puts too much air into the system.

Residents said the water looks dangerous and they are forced to keep bottled water on hand.

"You can't bathe. You can't brush your teeth. You can't shave," Tom Grafe said. "You're just afraid. You always have to have bottled water at your house."

Aqua America officials said they are not making large improvements to the water system because they believe that all residents will eventually hook into the city water system.

Residents disagree. They said that switch would cost them $1,800 and they are already paying for clean water now.

Roughly 110 to 130 residents are on the Aqua America water system.

As homes are disconnected from the Aqua America system to join the city grid, more rust and contaminants get into the pipes, company officials said.

Aqua America officials said the water is being tested often and is safe to drink.
