Chase Ends In Crash, Shootout At Hospital

POSTED: Monday, March 19, 2007
UPDATED: 5:44 pm CDT March 19, 2007

A chase involving vehicles along a freeway feeder road ended in a crash and shootout at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital on Monday morning, police told KPRC Local 2.

It happened shortly before 11 a.m. along the Southwest Freeway near Beechnut.

Two vehicles were involved in the chase when one of them crashed in a parking lot on the edge of the hospital grounds, officials said.

"The brown Ford F-150 entered the parking lot of the hospital and the Expedition pursued it and could not make the turn, ran over the bushes and crashed into several vehicles on the other side of the parking lot," said a witness who wished to remain unidentified.

The witness then heard gunshots.

"I heard one shot and then a succession of eight to 10 shots. It appeared that one individual was standing out in the feeder road firing at what appeared to be a red pickup truck. And then they were returning fire on both sides," the witness said.

He said the red pickup truck escaped.

Police said after the crash, three men involved ran away.

Another vehicle was hit during the incident. The driver was taken to the hospital where a condition was not released.

No one was shot, officials said.

"It's something I've never seen before. I've never seen someone actually open fire in the middle of the day on someone," the witness said. "It was terrifying and you're fixated -- absolutely fixated."

Several people were taken into custody.

Police do not know if the shooting was random or if there was a possible motive.

It is under investigation.
