Distracted Driver Plunges Car Into Lake

POSTED: Thursday, March 1, 2007
UPDATED: 5:05 pm CST March 1, 2007

A woman talking on a cellular phone plunged her car into a lake in a northwest Harris County neighborhood Thursday morning, officials told KPRC Local 2.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the Lexus sank in the man-made lake on Sunbright Drive near Lakes On Eldridge Drive at about 9:15 a.m.

Two men working nearby saw the accident and rushed to help her.

"They went in there and started trying to get her out," Capt. Paul Cordova said. "The deputy arrived and stripped down his uniform gear and got in there with them. The three of them were able to cut her out of her seat belt and got her out of the vehicle."

Cypress Fairbanks volunteer firefighters gave Kim Yuhee CPR and transported her to Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital in critical condition.

Deputies said Yuhee was distracted and did not realize that the road ended. The car jumped a curb, skidded through wet grass and spun into the lake, officials said.

Officials pulled the car out of the water to search for additional victims.
