Temperatures To Plunge Below Freezing

Cold air that moved into southeast Texas could break record lows in the Houston area overnight, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

Chilly temperatures helped a few snow flurries fall near Lake Jackson on Thursday morning.

"There were a couple of flurries that kind of moved up around the coastline," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Anthony Yanez said.

Temperatures are expected to plummet late Thursday.

"Once the sun goes down, those temperatures are going to fall like a rock," Yanez said.

The Houston area could see record low temperatures on Friday morning. A record low of 28 degrees was reached in 1951, but KPRC Local 2 predicted temperatures could hit 27 degrees.

KPRC Local 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley said people, plants and pets should be protected all over the area, but only those in Conroe and north of there should worry about their pipes.

"The only place that isn't going to freeze tonight is Galveston Island. If you're right there along the water, you should be OK. Everyone else is going to see that mercury dip right on down below freezing," he said.

Billingsley said a clear sky and calm wind would help bring temperatures to the following overnight lows, which are expected at about 6 a.m.

  • Anahuac: 29 degrees
  • Angleton: 27 degrees
  • Bay City: 25 degrees
  • Bush Intercontinental Airport: 27 degrees
  • College Station: 25 degrees
  • Columbus: 25 degrees
  • Conroe: 23 degrees
  • Downtown Houston: 28 degrees
  • Freeport: 29 degrees
  • Galveston: 33 degrees
  • Huntsville: 21 degrees
  • Kingwood: 25 degrees
  • League City: 29 degrees
  • Liberty: 25 degrees
  • Livingston: 22 degrees
  • Madisonville: 22 degrees
  • Navasota: 24 degrees
  • Palacios: 29 degrees
  • Pasadena: 28 degrees
  • Pearland: 27 degrees
  • Richmond: 25 degrees
  • Sealy: 25 degrees
  • Sugar Land: 25 degrees
  • Tomball: 24 degrees
  • Wharton: 24 degrees
  • The Woodlands: 23 degrees

"We're looking for temperatures in the mid- to upper 20s overnight," Billingsley said.

Friday's high is forecast at 54 degrees. On Saturday, the low will be 40 with a high of 65. Sunday, highs will reach 60 with a low of 38 degrees.

The Houston Independent School District planned to take precautions to make sure all its campuses are ready for students and teachers.

Plant operators will be at the schools at 5 a.m. to fire up the boilers to get the classrooms warm before everyone arrives.

The district has also scheduled extra mechanics to be sure all the buses are working and warmed up for the students.
