Officials Blame Bayou Destruction On New Port

POSTED: Wednesday, February 14, 2007
UPDATED: 5:15 pm CST February 14, 2007

The new Bayport project terminal was blamed for damaging the environment, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Seabrook Mayor Robin Riley called upon the Port of Houston to fix environmental damage caused by the new construction project.

Pine Gulley Park has been covered with tons of sand that was pushed there by ship traffic and construction of the new terminal, according to a new environmental impact study commissioned by the city.

"Right now with all the tons of sand that is coming from that project, it is blocking the saltwater from coming in and blocking the freshwater from going out," Riley said.

Riley said the sand buildup is already stopping people from launching boats and there are 30 inches of quicksand endangering park visitors in some spots.

The study stated that these ecological changes would eventually bring more alligators and mosquitoes, as well as harm Seabrook's shrimping industry.
