HOUSTON -- A man was arrested and charged with having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl he met online, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
Iran Perez-Bello, 30, was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child.
A Harris County constable said the 10th-grade girl claimed she initially met Perez-Bello on an Internet chat site called Univisionchat.com while she was in a computer lab at Austin High School.
The two began a relationship and had been seeing each other since October, according to deputies.
The girl's family said that it was OK for the 16-year-old to see Perez-Bello, who they thought was a 23-year-old man, only if he came to their home for supervised visits.
"He told them he was a successful business guy -- that he came here and made investments. He was opening up restaurants, opening up another one. He really smooth-talked them and won the parents over. They just thought he was OK," Harris County Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino said.
The family then learned that Perez-Bello was picking up the teenager at school in the morning and taking her to his apartment in Spring to have sex, according to officials.
At first, Perez-Bello refused to return the girl, authorities said, but after a couple of hours, he brought her home and was arrested.
The student had 17 unexcused absences in January.
Deputies described Perez-Bello as an operator who worked his way into the family's trust.
Authorities said they believe Perez-Bello may have had plans to take the girl out of the country.
Authorities want parents who may be ignorant of the law to know what is illegal.
"If your child is 16 years old, you cannot give consent -- family nor the child can give consent to have a sexual relationship, even though the family may say they didn't know this. But you've got to use some common sense," Trevino said. "Don't become so friendly with someone that tells you he's 23 and your daughter is 16. That is a legal issue. It's a legal question. It's a violation of the law. It's sexual assault of a child."
Perez-Bello is being held in the Harris County jail on an immigration status hold and a $25,000 bond. Officials suspect he may be an illegal immigrant from Mexico. He could face more charges depending on his immigration status.
HISD officials said neither the HISD Inspector General nor Austin High School officials have any evidence and cannot confirm that a school computer was used in this case.
The FBI has possession of the school computer and is trying to determine whether the two first made contact while the girl was in class.
HISD does not allow online chatting at school. There are also filters in place to not allow access to many online chat rooms.
