HOUSTON – An estimated 1,100 people packed Discovery Green in downtown Houston Tuesday night for the "Stand with Texas Women" bus tour.
Democratic lawmakers from the Texas Senate and officials from Planned Parenthood said women deserve to make decisions for their own bodies.
"Are you really ticked off? Have you really had enough? It's been a long time since we have been in power," said Sen. Rodney Ellis (D) of Houston. "I'll tell you friends, we have to show that crowd in power that we have waited too long. We have fought too hard. We have come too far and we have gotten too damn smart to let them stay in power."
When Sen. Sylvia Garcia (D), of Houston, suggested that Texas elect a female governor, the crowd erupted cheering for Sen. Wendy Davis.
Davis filibustered for 11 hours on the senate floor killing a bill, in the first special session, that would ban abortions after 20 weeks and further regulate the procedure.
"Now, I didn't mean to start anything, but I don't think it's bad that we have a woman fighting to govern that we have a woman governor," said Garcia.
Publicly, Davis mentioned nothing about her political plans.
"We are here because we are tired of politicians tying their political aspirations to consequences that hurt real people in our communities," said Davis.
After talking with supporters, Local 2 asked Davis if she would run for governor.
"Honestly right now, we have a real battle on our hands in the next two days," said Davis. "We're going to get through that and then I'll have time to reflect on what's best for me and my family, and possibly what might be in the best interest of the future of the state."
The bus tour continues Wednesday in Dallas and Ft. Worth. The lawmakers said they will be back in Austin on Thursday.
