11 children hurt in collision

HOUSTON – Nearly a dozen children were taken to hospitals after the van they were in was involved in a wreck.

Houston police said the driver of an SUV hit a van carrying 11 children on West 43rd near Ella about 8 a.m. on Friday.

The children suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospitals as a precaution, officials said.

The driver of the van, Stephanie Worrell, said she was shaken up.

"I remember a loud crash sound before I realized we were hit from the back," she said. "I had a few (children) screaming for their parents. They were shaken up, frantic tears on eyes."

Investigators said the driver of the SUV, Sonia Noemi Martinez, 28, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

The van was operated by Eagle Achievers Academy, which provides transportation to other schools.

"I think it's terrible someone would be in a school area drunk," said Cassandra Meyers, the academy's director. "It's unfortunate children had to go through this trauma today."
