Mayor Drops Plan To Ban N-Word

POSTED: Friday, January 26, 2007
UPDATED: 10:38 am CST January 26, 2007

The mayor of Brazoria withdrew his proposed ordinance ban the N-word after residents turned out voice their opinions, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

"It's not going to hurt me because no one's going to come up to me and call me that to my face," one resident said.

The hearing was held in a parking lot because the town's City Council chambers were too small for the crowd.

"You have opened up a can of worms, and it's time for it to be stopped," an angry resident said.

Some residents said the ordinance would do more harm than good.

"If this passes, I feel like it's going to put me in a bigger bind than I'm already in," one resident said.

Mayor Ken Corley said he never expected the ordinance to be such a big issue.

"I know morally I'm doing the right thing," Corley said. "The media attention that this has created, I never expected this. I don't want it, and if there was a way to back out of this, I would."

The ordinance would have been a class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500.

A resident would have had to file a complaint that they were offended and then a citation would have been issued.
