HOUSTON -- A newborn baby was found dead in a plastic bag at a northwest Harris County apartment complex, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Officials said someone walked into an apartment in the 5700 block of West Mount Houston Road near Antoine Drive and discovered the newborn before 4 p.m. Thursday.
The baby was taken to Willowbrook Methodist Hospital with CPR in progress. The newborn was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Detectives said they are working to detemine if the baby died before or after birth.
The baby's mother, 31, was also taken to the hospital. She was inside the apartment when the baby was found.
Relatives who live nearby said they did not know the woman was pregnant.
"I was coming from the store and they told me they had gotten the baby and all. The baby wasn't breathing. I said, 'I hope the baby ain't dead.' (The baby's mother) said she didn't know what was going on through the whole thing," cousin Alfred Bailey said.
"She didn't know what was going on when she was giving birth?" KPRC Local 2 reporter Phil Archer said.
"That's what I heard," Bailey said.
Another relative said the baby's mother had been out of work for seven months and that she has been depressed the past several days.
