MISSOURI CITY, Texas -- A woman survived an explosion that destroyed her Missouri City home and damaged several neighboring houses early Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Missouri City firefighters said the home in the 3400 block of Covey Trail Drive near Bermuda Dunes Drive exploded just after midnight.
The blast frightened neighbors and could be felt miles away.
"All of a sudden we just heard the loudest boom I've ever heard in my life," neighbor Mathew Sincerbox said. "My mom and sister started yelling for their life."
"I just heard this tremendous explosion," neighbor Judy Wyatt said. "I had no idea what it was. It blew the door open so I looked outside and it was Ann's house that had blown up."
One neighbor rushed outside and found homeowner Ann Smith standing in her back yard.
"She was standing up in the back yard," neighbor Jim Wyatt said. "I climbed through the debris and got a chair and set her down in the chair. She was very disoriented and seemed to be OK."
Smith was rushed to Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital in good condition.
"I can't comprehend how she's alive," Sincerbox said.
Smith told officials that she may have been in the back yard when the home exploded. Authorities said they believed that she was thrown from the area.
The blast also damaged several neighboring homes.
"It broke our front windows out, blew in our front door and blew out one of our garage doors," Jim Wyatt said.
"I was worried. I thought, 'Oh, they're dead. It was huge. I thought a plane hit my house," neighbor Bonnie Neis said.
Crews evacuated nearby residents because of a possible gas leak, which may have caused the home to explode.
Investigators said it will take several days for them determine the exact cause of the explosion.
