HOUSTON -- A man was trapped for more than an hour after an oak tree fell on his house on Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The tree fell on Jose Olvera's home in the 4800 block of Hardway Street near Mangum Road at about 5:30 a.m.
Olvera was in bed when the tree crashed into the home.
"We heard him screaming, so we came over here," relative Leticia Hernandez said. "He never stopped screaming until about 5 minutes before they took him out."
Olvera was transported to Ben Taub Hospital after he was rescued. He did not suffer any serious injuries, officials said.
A neighbor who heard the commotion said he was amazed Olvera was not killed.
"I'm really surprised he survived," George Arismendez said. "That's a big oak tree for a little house."
Officials said it is likely that recent rains loosened the soil surrounding the tree, causing it to topple onto the house.
No one else was inside the home when the tree fell.
The home and a vehicle were destroyed.
Relatives said Olvera did not have homeowner's insurance and he will stay with relatives while he recovers.
