Houston Airports Resume Operations After Fog

POSTED: Thursday, December 14, 2006
UPDATED: 3:21 pm CST December 14, 2006

Flights out of Houston were grounded and flights to Houston were not allowed to land for hours because of heavy fog in the area, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Federal Aviation Administration officials said numerous flights to and from George Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports were delayed or canceled on Thursday morning.

Operations at Hobby Airport returned to normal shortly before 11 a.m., officials said.

The National Weather Service issued a dense-fog advisory for the Houston area until noon, but it was canceled shortly before that when the fog cleared.

At times, visibility was a quarter-mile or less.

"We have sea fog that is moving up from Galveston Island, " KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Anthony Yanez said "Because of the cool temperatures, it's really allowed the fog to penetrate and just stay right on top of us."

Continental Airlines diverted some flights to Austin, San Antonio and Dallas.

"They kept telling us that they could not land," passenger Abram Garcia said. "They had the most advanced equipment in the plane, however it still was not advanced enough to allow them to land in this type of environment."

Departure delays at Bush Intercontinental Airport averaged about three hours. Flights returned to a normal schedule in the afternoon.
