LOS ANGELES -- Another videotape of a Los Angeles police officer in a confrontation has resulted in the officer's arrest.
Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton announced Thursday the arrest of an officer accused of beating a teen at a police station.
He's accused of assaulting a handcuffed 16-year-old in a juvenile holding cell.
The 13-year department veteran, Sean Joseph Meade, 41, was arrested for investigation of assault under color of authority. Police Chief William Bratton also suspended him.
Bratton said the case stemmed from the arrest Tuesday of a 16-year-old boy in the Chinatown area. After the teen was brought to the Central Division police station for a curfew violation, an officer reported to the watch commander that he heard a "disturbance" that involved Meade and the teen.
A video camera that recently was installed in the holding room to gather unrelated evidence of vandalism to chairs captured the confrontation, Bratton said. The teen was handcuffed with his hands behind his back at the time, the chief added.
Bratton said he ordered the arrest based on what he viewed on the videotape. He said the officer was not physically provoked.
"Later in the evening, after watching the video with members of my command staff, I felt that there was sufficient justification for an arrest," Bratton said.
He said Meade apparently was not aware of the video cameras.
The chief declined to go into detail but said the videotape will not be made public because it's part of the department's investigation. A department news release stated that state personnel laws prevented police from releasing details of the alleged beating and the videotape.
The teen was examined at a hospital but had no apparent injuries and remained at Juvenile Hall. Police are trying to find his guardians.
Meade was free Thursday afternoon on $10,000 bond.
