HOUSTON -- A church in southeast Houston was vandalized and burglarized on Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Church members said a security system notified a member that a burglary was likely in progress the Christian United People's Center on Winkler Drive near Telephone Road at about 8:30 p.m.
One of the church members arrived at the scene and said he could tell something was not right.
"When I saw the light I knew that somebody was in the building," one member said. "I knew that somebody was in the building because we don't leave the lights on."
Church members said they called 911, but police did not respond until about 30 minutes later. They said they saw a person climb through a kitchen window as they waited for authorities to arrive.
Officials said the alleged burglar ransacked several offices and destroyed a Coca-Cola machine.
"We believe he was looking for money," church member Vernice Serell said.
Church members said about $100 in cash from choir collection and Bible study was missing.
Houston police said they found a jacket the burglar was possibly wearing across the street from the church.
No injuries were reported.
