Wrecker Driver Shot During Repossession

POSTED: Tuesday, October 24, 2006
UPDATED: 12:10 pm CDT October 24, 2006

A wrecker driver was shot when he repossessed a car Monday, officials told KPRC Local 2.

Houston police said the wrecker driver repossessed the car at a home in the 4200 block of Weaver Road near Hirsch Road at about 11:30 p.m.

Officials said the driver was shot twice in the back as he was pulling away with the car.

The owners of the car chased the wrecker driver on the Eastex Freeway, investigators said. The owners pulled in front of the tow truck, causing the driver to lose control and crash into a concrete wall on the Eastex Freeway near Little York Road, police said.

Detectives said the repossessed car detached from the tow truck and crashed into a taco stand on the Eastex Freeway near Darwin Street.

No one was inside the taco stand at the time of the crash.

The wrecker driver drove to a nearby Citgo for help. An ambulance transported the driver to Memorial Hermann Hospital in good condition.

A McDonald's manager said he saw a car chasing the tow truck through his restaurant's parking lot.

"A black Impala was right behind the tow truck and the guy driving pulled out a gun," Josue Lopez said. "As soon as I saw that, I told my crew to stay out of the windows, we're not serving customers."

Officials have not said who shot the driver, but are interviewing several persons of interest.

Authorities said the repossessed vehicle and taco stand were totaled.

"It's what we live off," taco stand owner Ana Karen said. "We're just mad because how can there be people that can do this to us?"
