DALLAS - Police officers found nearly 100 dogs abandoned in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in two days.
The Flower Mound Police Department received a call at 1:19 a.m. Tuesday saying a pack of dogs was running loose near Highway 377 and Stonecrest Road in Flower Mound.
When they arrived, officers discovered 51 Maltese mixed-breed dogs living in filth. Police say no one had emptied the dog's cages, bathed them, or brushed them for at least six months.
Just 26 hours later, someone abandoned 40 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and one Cocker Spaniel at 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday near Sanger. Police found the dogs in a similar condition as the Maltese pups.
Police and animal control officials believe someone released the animals to avoid the new dog breeding inspection and licensing requirements established by the state just a month prior.
Two animal cruelty cases are currently under way.
Officials say the dogs will likely be healthy enough for adoption next week.
