JCPenney settles 'discount' scam lawsuit and other business news

HOUSTON – JCPenney will pay $50 million back to customers in a settlement over deceptive discount practices.

The complaint was first filed in 2012. Under the proposed settlement, shoppers will have the option of selecting a cash payment or store credit. A California woman filed the lawsuit after she bought three blouses for $17 each, supposedly 40 percent off. She later learned the shirts had never sold for more than $18 at any time in the previous months.

Shoppers at Simon Malls want their Santa Claus to live in the traditional style home, not a futuristic igloo. Simon introduced a new setup that deviates from the usual snowy evergreens and cozy décor of Santa's home in a few of its malls.

The display included fake glaciers, artificial snow banks and no Christmas tree along with interactive flat screens and a light show, which was enough to get shoppers complaining.
