HOUSTON -

One woman is dead and four others are in the hospital after several cars crashed in southwest Houston.

It happened Saturday night around 10 p.m. near the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Dunvale Road.

According to the Houston Police Department, a Ford Taurus with a female driver and a male passenger was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Richmond Avenue.

The driver ran the red light at Dunvale and slammed into a white car.

The Taurus then continued across the median and slammed into a Mazda that was traveling westbound on Richmond.

The Mazda had two people riding inside.

Both were taken to the hospital, where the female driver of the Mazda died.

The passenger in the Ford Taurus was also taken to the hospital. 

The woman who caused the accident was taken into custody, and police say they believe she was intoxicated. 

The driver of the white car was not hurt.
