Store clerk shot to death during attempted robbery at north Houston Dollar General

HOUSTON – Police are searching for a man accused of fatally shooting a store clerk Sunday, Houston Police confirmed.

The shooting occurred after 1 p.m. in the parking lot of a Dollar General, located at the 500 block of Crosstimbers Street. At least a dozen evidence makers were counted on scene.

Investigators said the shooting took place as Dequan Donte Anderson was leaving the store to make a cash deposit at an area bank. The gunman followed Anderson, authorities said, and opened his car door, in an attempt to steal the bag of money.

"The employee didn't give up the money bag, and the suspect took out a handgun and shot the employee several times, striking him in his back and other parts of his body. The suspect grabbed the money bag, and took off running with it," said Sgt. M. Brady, Houston Police Department.

Anderson, 20, tried to drive away, but crashed his car into a nearby median, police said.

Several witnesses were interviewed by detectives and said the suspect ran north on Oxford, then got into a dark blue Dodge Avenger.

Police also said there is surveillance video from the Dollar General showing the suspect before he fled.

Doctors pronounced Anderson dead at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital.

Neighbors described Anderson as kind and hardworking. Anderson's wife said they just got married a year ago.
