Body found in San Jacinto River after tugboat flips

The U.S. Coast Guard says a body has been recovered after a tugboat capsized on the San Jacinto River Tuesday morning.

Five people were on board when the boat flipped over at 7:44 a.m. Four were rescued, but one remained in the water.

The Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service restricted waterway traffic at 8:42 a.m.

Petty Officer 1st Class Andrew Kendrick says the man was unresponsive when located following Tuesday morning's accident. He was found by the Air Station Houston MH-65 crew a few hundred feet downstream. Rescue boats were sent to his location to recover his body.

Kendrick says the four other people on aboard the tugboat survived being dumped into the water.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused the tug — the Ricky J Leboeuf — to flip. Kendrick says the accident does not appear related to recent heavy rain and flooding in the Houston area.

Kendrick says the tugboat was working near barges when it overturned. Investigators are looking at whether the tugboat snagged a barge line and flipped. The bottom of the overturned tug was barely visible in the water following the accident.

The victim's name wasn't immediately released.

Waterway traffic remains prohibited between red No. 2 light and the I-10 bridge. However, the Coast Guard said some boats may be allowed to transit the area on a case-by-case basis.
